Research Maestro:
- Who is the author of the text?
- What is his biography? - 5 interesting facts
- When was the text written?
- Find a synopsis of the text
- Reflect on this synopsis and in your own 100 words, write what Maestro is about.
- Who are the main characters?
- What are some of the main themes you can find that are developed throughout the text?
Borrow Maestro from the BOOKROOM - you need to read this text as a imagery/'painting pictures with words' text.
- Have sticky notes as you read. Stick them in when you find a specific technique (simile, metaphor, imagery etc) or when you find an example of a theme you may develop on.
- Hint: the themes we will be looking at are; RELATIONSHIPS, REFLECTION ON LIFE and VALUE OF HINDSIGHT, SELF-DISCOVERY and ESCAPISM.
Ongoing homework - answering the summary questions as you read.

IF you have finished your novel and chapter summary questions....
1. To practice your creative writing responses, you are to choose one of the characters from the novel and write from their perspective instead of Paul's.
For example; Write from Maestro's point of view as he first meets Paul.
Use the information from the novel to help you describe what is happening, but you have the freedom to create anything! Don't forget to use a range of techniques to enhance your imagery.

Lots of work to complete from last week - lucky we have a double lesson today to get it all done! No time to waste though;
- Finish technique and analysis from quotes
- Answer the two questions in your own words - samples/guide to help you. We need to start lifting our vocabulary!
- Work through questions on last slide of PowerPoint. Write in detail - use quotes + techniques + effect to = how it creates meaning. Link back to your rubric and overall module question, "How does it paint a picture with words to the audience?"
- Extension work: I have adapted the 2011 HSC Past Paper question to suit our Preliminary Module;
In what ways are people and their experiences brought to life through painting pictures with words (the distinctively visual)?
In your response, make detailed reference to your prescribed text and at least ONE other related text of your own choosing.
Using the FIRST IMPRESSIONS extract - write one body paragraph to suit this question.
You ALL need to start getting into the habit of answering questions from past papers. I will guide you through the NESA site and how to look and ENGLISH past papers.

We need to push on and continue with another extract today - SETTING. There are many different settings throughout the novel, today we will be looking at the Darwin setting.
The main action of the novel takes place in Darwin before the advent of Cyclone Tracy. Paul’s father sees Darwin as a philistine place and quotes Banjo Paterson who described it as a “city of booze, blow, and blasphemy” (p.9). It is, he believes, a refuge for social misfits “a town populated by men who had run as far as they could flee” (p.17). For this very reason, Darwin provides the ideal haven for Eduard Keller, a man who is concerned to distance himself as far as possible from the circumstances of his former life. Unlike his father, Paul responds enthusiastically to Darwin, noting “that world and I were moulded from the same substances” (p.114). For him, it is a “sun-drenched town of lush gardens, scents, and sexuality” (p.74). It is not long before the adolescent Paul begins to experience a conflict between his sensuality and the demands made on him by the disciplined life of a serious music student.
