In preparation for your Module Exploring Transitions unit next year, we will be looking at the module, Changes and Choices. With this, comes a new rubric;
In this elective, students explore and analyse a variety of texts that portray the ways in which individuals make changes and choices throughout life and society. These changes may be challenging, confronting, exciting or transformative and may result in growth, change and a range of consequences for the individual and others. Through exploring their prescribed text and other related texts of their own choosing, students consider how changes and choices can result in new knowledge and ideas, shifts in attitudes and beliefs, and a deepened understanding of the self and others. Students respond to and compose a range of texts that expand our understanding of the experience of venturing into new worlds.

Watch the trailer below and write a 200 word paragraph answering the following question; How has the trailer used the character of Munro to persuade the audience to view the film?
Sample Response;
Composers use fundamental human experiences to draw sympathy from an audience. The trailer for The World’s Fastest Indian provides insight to a ‘Pure Legend’ Burt Munro, who strives to achieve his dream of modifying his 1920s Indian Motorcycle. The opening voiceover, “All my life I’ve wanted to do something big”, sets a triumphant tone to persuade the audience to view the entirety of the film. The use of captions and repetition of ‘pure’ throughout the trailer; “Pure Speed”, “Pure Passion” and “Pure Legend”, allow the audience to connect to the nature of a good willed, driven character. The use of simple, short syntax “to set a land speed record” further emphasises Burt Munro’s clear goal; to have the world’s fastest Indian. The end caption “Speed is the Dream” acts as an emotional plea to the audience, enabling them to reflect back to obstacles and challenges they may have with their own hopes and dreams. The uplifted, enriched non-diegetic sounds throughout the trailer provides a positive vibe to convince the audience to view the film.

Working with a partner to read and edit Opening Scenes and Handling Run paragraphs.
- Thesis statement evident?
- 'Inbetweenie' that states the scene you are analysing and how the thesis is evident specifically to Munro?
- A minimum of 4 techniques that use the cheat sheet to effectively analyse
- Are they describing what happens in the shot, without retelling...
- Are they mentioning a long shot but then talking about dialogue?? They need to explain what happens in the long shot and how it creates meaning in relation to the thesis statement.
- Do they link back to the thesis throughout? Does it have purpose?
- Does it have sophisticated language and use of synonyms throughout?
- Does it have the rubric throughout?
- Does it have a linking sentence?
- Have they provided context? For example the Handling Run scene at the Bonneville Salt Flats? Be specific!
- Could they include anything extra? Anything about the composer??
Look back at the Trailer Analysis paragraph to help with structure.

Today you will be working individually in the Library on your essay.
REMINDER: Your draft is due by Thursday!
Tomorrow, make sure you have questions for me as I won't be in your lessons on Wednesday or Thursday (DioSounds). These lessons will be for you to write your essay. We lose our double lesson on Monday next week (public holiday) - therefore, next Tuesday is our last lesson for me to provide you with class feedback. I would have liked to do a timed response here, but it may not be possible if I need to give you feedback. I will try get all drafts back to you by Friday (check your school emails as I will have to scan the comments through).
UPDATE: I am feeling nice today. You may take ONE PAGE of notes into the assessment with you. The guidelines are;
- One side only
- Must be handwritten
- You can only have thesis statements, quotes and techniques written in dot point form.
